artist statement
My background in the medical field provides me with a deep understanding of the challenges women face in obtaining reproductive healthcare services and the vital role that access to care plays in enabling women to live rich and meaningful lives and remain autonomous and engaged in their community. I am deeply interested in the idea of time, and how women’s rights have changed - and continue to change - and the effect of these changes on the women’s rights movement. My current body of work is inspired by the stories of individual women as it relates to reproductive care, as well as their thoughts, worries, and beliefs about the direction of women’s rights in our country.
Much of my work focuses on women’s bodies and the meaning society places on the female form. It’s important to show bodies that are not perfect, with missing pieces, cracks and bumps, and show signs of natural deterioration. By creating anonymous forms, void of defining facial features or skin tone, I invite the viewer to see themselves – or someone else – in the work and create their own meaning from the experience.
